The Story of the Autograph
Mat Latos is a starting pitcher currently with the New Jersey Jackals in independent minor league baseball. He pitched in the majors through some of last year but in recent years he’s jumped around the league a lot. He’s pitched for the Padres, Reds, Marlins, Dodgers, Angels, White Sox, Nationals and Blue Jays.
Latos grew up in my neck of the woods, Northern Virginia… Alexandria to be exact. When he was 12 he moved to Florida. He was a star through high school and committed to Oklahoma to play for the Sooners. But the Padres drafted him in the 11th round of the 2006 Draft. He was originally the fifth ranked high school picture but he had some maturity issues and fell. When he asked for a $3 million signing bonus that was too much for the Padres. Then he enrolled at Broward College. The Padres kept his rights and days before the next years draft they signed him and paid him $1.25 million dollars.
Mat has had some success in the league in his first five years. He had three 14 win seasons and had an ERA under 3.5 with the Padres and Reds. Since then it’s been tough times for him. With the Reds in 2014 he came back a bit early from an injury and then ended up having both knee and elbow issues. From there he moved to a bunch of teams with trades, one year contracts and minor league contracts. He never really stuck anyplace though and has never really gotten to be that same pitcher he once was.

I didn’t know what to expect from this one, but it came back really quick. Quick like the fastest one I’ve gotten back this year. I kind of thought Mat was a good signer but in recent years he had jumped around so much that I didn’t really know where to send it. I was doing a recent check through the independent league rosters and found Mat with the New Jersey Jackals. He’s got a solid signature and it came out pretty well on these cards.
