The Story of the Autograph

Mariano Duncan is a former second baseman and shortstop in the major leagues. He played from 1985 to 1998 in the US and Japan. During that time he played for the Los Angeles Dodgers (twice), Cincinnati Reds (twice), Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, and Yomiuri Giants.

Duncan is a native of the Dominican Republic. The Dodgers signed him as an undrafted free agent in January of 1982. After spending three years in their minor league system he made his major league debut on April 9, 1985. He had an immediate impact, playing in 142 games and hitting .244 with six home runs, 39 RBI, 38 stolen bases, and 24 doubles. He was third in the Rookie of the Year balloting that season. But his playing time would decrease over the next two seasons.

The Dodgers traded him along with Tim Leary to the Reds for Kal Daniels and Lenny Harris in 1989. He would have a great season in 1990 while helping the Reds to a World Series title. That year he led the league in triples and had a 55 stolen bases. He would then move on to the Phillies where he had his one and only All-Star season in 1994 and was part of their run to the World Series they would eventually lose to the Toronto Blue Jays.

From there he moved around quite a lot but ended up with the Yankees on their run to the 1996 World Series for his second World Championship. Before officially retiring he would play one year in Japan in 1998.

These days he’s been coaching in the minor in the Mets system.

Mariano has such a fancy signature. These came out really great. I especially like the 1990 Donruss card. Partially because he won a World Series that year but also because the red cards go with the Reds uniforms. I have a card of him in a Yankee uniform and I’m really hoping to try him again to get that signed.

Thanks Mr. Duncan! I’m giving this return a 7.5 overall.
