The Story of the Autograph

Jesús Manuel Marcano Trillo, affectionately known as Manny Trillo, carved out a remarkable 17-year Major League Baseball (MLB) career defined by defensive brilliance, clutch performances, and quiet leadership. Born on December 25, 1950, in Caripito, Venezuela, Trillo’s journey from a young catcher to a celebrated second baseman is a testament to his adaptability and dedication to the game.

Trillo’s passion for baseball was evident from a young age. At 14, he was determined to pursue a professional career, leading him to train under former MLB player Pompeyo Davalillo. In January 1968, the Philadelphia Phillies signed the 17-year-old Trillo as an international amateur free agent. Initially a catcher, his potential as an infielder was soon recognized, and he transitioned to playing shortstop and third base in the minors. Trillo made his MLB debut with the Oakland Athletics on June 28, 1973.

Trillo’s defensive prowess became his hallmark. Known for his strong throwing arm and impeccable fielding, he earned three Gold Glove Awards (1979, 1981, 1982) and two Silver Slugger Awards (1980, 1981). In 1982, he set a Major League record with 89 consecutive errorless games and 479 consecutive errorless fielding chances.

His offensive contributions were equally significant. A four-time All-Star (1977, 1981–1983), Trillo was instrumental in the Philadelphia Phillies’ 1980 World Series championship run. He was named the National League Championship Series (NLCS) MVP after batting .381 with two doubles, a triple, and four RBIs against the Houston Astros.

Trillo’s tenure with the Phillies (1979–1982) was marked by consistent excellence. He led all National League second basemen in games played (501), hits (516), doubles (85), and total bases (686) during this period.

In recognition of his contributions, Trillo was inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame in 2021, joining other legends from the 1980 championship team. Reflecting on the honor, Trillo expressed deep gratitude, stating, “It’s like another World Series. Oh, yeah. It’s another honor.”

After retiring from playing in 1989, Trillo remained active in baseball, serving as a minor league coach and instructor for several organizations, including the Cubs, Phillies, Yankees, Brewers, and White Sox. He retired from coaching in 2012.

In retirement, Trillo enjoys a leisurely lifestyle, often playing golf and spending time with friends. He once humorously described his routine: “I wake up and have a lunch. Get ready for my golf game around 3 o’clock… And then I go back to sleep again.”

Wow, this is a ton of returns to catch up on from Manny. He is a newer guy for me, meaning that I only tried him in my latest iteration of being a TTM collector. But you can see that it seems that he started off a little tough for me, but in more later returns he’s been really consistent.

Thanks Mr. Trillo! I’m giving this collection of returns a 7 overall.

These aren’t my first returns from him. To see my first returns, check out these posts:
