The Story of the Autograph
Lee Tunnell is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1982 through 1989 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, and Minnesota Twins. He also played with the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks in Nippon Professional Baseball.
Tunnell was born and raised in Texas. He went to college at Baylor University and was drafted by the Pirates in the second round of the 1981 MLB Draft. Just one year later he debuted on September 4, 1982 for them. He worked mostly as a starter but also was a reliever for the Pirates from 1982 to 1985. His best season was 1983 when he went 11-6 with 35 appearances and 25 starts with a 3.65 ERA.
The Pirates released him in 1986 after he didn’t make an appearance in the majors. He moved on to the St. Louis Cardinals for the 1987 season, was released again after not appearing in the majors in 1988, and then played a bit for the Twins in 1989. Before officially retiring he went on to Japan from 1991 to 1993.
In more recent years he’s coached for the Reds (twice – 2006, 2019-preset) and the Milwaukee Brewers (2012-2018).
The Score on Lee Tunnell – 7.0
Lee has a loopy autograph and while I didn’t think it would have been, it kind of makes sense with the letters in his name after seeing it. Especially the “ll” at the end. Something that’s always interesting to me is when there’s inconsistencies in what a player puts on the cards. Lee only included his number on the Cardinals card but not the Pirates cards.
Thanks Mr. Tunnell! I’m giving this return a 7.
