The Story of the Autograph

Kevin Mench is a former outfielder who played in Major League Baseball and Nippon Professional Baseball. He played from 2002 through 2010 with the Rangers, Brewers, Blue Jays, and Nationals. In 2009 he played in Japan with the Hanshin Tigers.

Mench was born and raised in Delaware and went to the University of Delaware for college. He helped lead the Blue Hens to the NCAA tournament in consecutive years (’98 and ’99). In 1998 he led the NCAA with 33 home runs and also had 72 RBI to with the National Player of the Year.

The Rangers drafted Mench in 1999 in the fourth round of the MLB Draft. He spend the first four-plus seasons in Texas and had what might be his two best years in 2004 and 2005. Each of those years he received some good playing time and hit over .260 with 25 or more homers and more than 70 RBI. In 2006 he had a streak of seven straight games with home runs and set an all-time record for right-handed batters. He was traded Brewers later than year.

Things didn’t go as well with the Brewers and Mench didn’t help it much either. Brewers fans criticized his performance (which wasn’t great) and then it didn’t help when he said he didn’t want to platoon, which didn’t make too much sense to fans because of his performance. After one more season with the Brewers he was kind of one his way out of the MLB. HE spent time in Toronto and Washington but didn’t get much playing time.

Kevin has a a signature that is a little hard for me to understand. It doesn’t look like he has a “K” in there. In fact, it almost looks as if he only signs his last name. I kind of like the concept of doing that because it’s different, but he’s definitely putting his first initial in there. I always love cards of players signing autographs and then especially like it when those get signed.

Thanks Mr. Mench! I’m giving this return a 6.
