The Story of the Autograph

Ken Singleton is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 1970 through 1984 with the New York Mets, Montreal Expos, and Baltimore Orioles.

Singleton was born and raised in New York and played baseball and basketball in high school. He went to Hofstra University on Long Island and was drafted by the Mets with the third overall pick in the first round of the 1967 MLB Draft. His major league debut came three years later on June 24, 1970. The Mets traded him to the Expos in 1972 in a package that brought them Rusty Staub.

But it’s the Orioles that most people remember Singleton with the most. He was traded along with Mike Torrez to the Orioles in 1974. He spent the next ten years with the Orioles and won two AL Pennants and a World Series in 1983. He had two really great seasons with the Orioles in 1977 and 1979 when he put up 24 homers, 99 RBI, a .328 career high average and over 100 walks; then a career high 35 homers, career high 111 RBI, a .295 average and over 100 walks, respectively. In each of those years he finished in the top three of MVP voting.

After playing, Singleton went into the broadcasting biz. First he worked in Baltimore and then moved on to the Blue Jays and Expos. These days he works for the Yankees on the YES Network. He announced he would retire in 2018, but came back for 2019 and plans to come back for 2020.

The Score on Ken Singleton – 6.5

Ken really has an “action packed” signature. Its an average size in the grand scheme but it came out well on these cards. I think my favorite is the 1985 card, but unfortunately he didn’t play in 1985. Ken was a great player so it’s nice to get an autograph from a player like him via TTM.

Thanks Mr. Singleton! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
