The Story of the Autograph
Keith Hernandez is a former first baseman in the major leagues. He played from 1974 to 1990 with the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets, and Cleveland Indians.
Hernandez is a native of California. He was drafted by the Cardinals in the 42nd round of the 1971 MLB Draft. He’s be the last player selected and signed from that draft to play in the major leagues, making his debut for St. Louis on August 30, 1974. It took him two seasons in the majors before he was a regular starter in the majors in 1976. He would be come an All-Star twice-over with the Cardinals in 1979 and 1980 and earn a share of the 1979 MVP Award. He would also be a part of the Cardinals 1982 World Championship team. But he would have several disagreements with the Cardinals management and manager Whitey Herzog and would be traded to the Mets in June of 1983.
He chose the number 17 after joining the club because his number with the Cardinals, 37, was retired as it was Casey Stengel’s number. He joined a bad team but in 1984 the Mets started bringing up young stars like Rookie of the Years Darryl Strawberry and Doc Gooden. They also started bringing in other veterans like Gary Carter that ultimately helped them become World Series champions in 1986. After the 1989 season he signed with the Indians and struggled with injures before retiring and playing his last game on July 24, 1990.
Hernandez is probably best known for three things: his Gold Gloves, his Seinfeld appearances, and his mustache. He won eleven Gold Glove awards during his time in St. Louis and New York. These days he famously joked about it while color commentating on Mets games. He also famously appeared on Seinfeld in the 90’s with the famous like, “I’m Keith Hernandez.” Lastly, that mustache. I remember my aunt loving him and his mustache when I was growing up. He took it off for a little while at some point, but it’s pretty iconic.
He’s have his Mets number retired in a ceremony on July 9, 2022.
The Score on Keith Hernandez – 8.0
Keith was one of my favorite players and now works as part of my favorite broadcast teams. Of course I’m biased because he does it for Mets games. I love listening to him sign throughout the games when bad things happen (not just to the Mets but mostly during any team’s defensive lapses). I had to get him on a Mets card and I think 1986 had to be the choice because of the World Series win that year. And I really wanted him on a Cardinals card, but I didn’t have two many that were in great condition so this was my best choice. He has an awesome signature and it came out great on these.
Also, this was my first attempt at using Past Pros. It was a great experience and super easy. It came back quick but ultimately that’s Keith.
Thanks Mr. Hernandez! I’m giving this return an 8.
