The Story of the Autograph
Jose Tabata is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 2010 to 2015 with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Tabata is a native of Venezuela. He was originally signed by the Yankees in August 2014 as an amateur free agent at the age of 16. He hit very well in he Yankees farm system and rose to become as high as their number two prospect, playing in the Futures Game in 2006. Two years later the Yankees would deal him and others to the Pirates to get Damaso Marte and Xavier Nady.
He spent the first years in the Pirates minor league system and was called up to make his debut on June 9, 2010. He ended up hitting (.299) and fielding very well and finished eighth in the Rookie of the Year voting. The Pirates extended his contract through 2019. Unfortunately injuries and performance kept him up and down to the minors. Plus guys like Starling Marte leapfrogged him in the pecking order.
On June 20, 2015, Tabata had a famous Hit By Pitch from Max Scherzer. After retiring the first 26 batters, Mad Max had him with a 2-2 count. Scherzer’s pitch came inside and clipped his elbow guard and ruined the chance for a perfect game. The next batter flew out and Scherzer still had a no-hitter. Some thought that he leaned into the pitch, but Scherzer didn’t seem to hold any ill will toward him.
Tabata was traded to the Dodgers for Mike Morse in 2015 and was released a year later. He played some in Mexico before getting another try in the bigs with the Blue Jays farm system. After that he played in the independent minor leagues and his latest stint was back in Mexico back in 2018.
The Score on Jose Tabata – 7.5
Jose has a pretty sweet signature and quite possibly the greatest “J” in the TTM game. That thing has some character to it and looks like it really carries his first name. I love the crosses on the “J” and the “Ts” and how they really almost give him a line to sign under instead of on.
Thanks Mr. Tabata! I’m giving this return a 7.5.
