The Story of the Autograph
Jose Cardenal is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He had a long, eighteen-year career that spanned from 1963 to 1980. During that time he played for the San Francisco Giants, California Angels, Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, and Kansas City Royals.
Cardenal is a native of Cuba. The Giants signed him as an amateur free agent in September of 1960 and he would make his major league debut for them three years later on April 14, 1963. In the first half of his career he bounced a around a lot, only spending two or three seasons with a team before moving on, mostly by trade. He went to the Angels for Jack Hiatt, the Indians for Chuck Hinton, The Cardinals for Vada Pinson, the Brewers (with others) for Ted Kubiak and a minor leaguer, and then to the Cubs for Jim Colborn , Brock Davis, and Earl Stephenson.
He was a good base stealer, mostly in the first half of his career. He put up a career-high 40 stolen bases in 1968 with the Indians. Cardenal was pretty good for at stealing at least 20 bags through 1976 and his years with the Cubs. But with the Cubs he had a few years with some good hitting as well. From 1972 to 1976 he his at least .291 with a career high of .317 in 1975.
He would move on to the Phillies, Mets, and Royals before calling it a career as a player. He went on to coaching in the Reds, Cardinals, Yankees and Rays organizations and was the first base coach for three of the Yankees World Series teams in 1996, 1998 and 1999.
He was part of a group that went to the Cubs visit to the White House when they won the 2017 World Series and got a hug from Michelle Obama. As a native Chicagoan, she said she wore here cap over her afro just like him.
The Score on Jose Cardenal – 5.0
Jose doesn’t really put too much on cards. It’s not just a small signature, but it actually looks like the 1974 card is a letter short. I’m not sure that he put a “J” on his first name. Even though these are in thin marker you can at least see the signature and the 1975 signature didn’t get hidden by a facsimile signature. I’m glad I got him in a Cubs uniform because that’s where he had his best seasons.
Thanks Mr. Cardenal! I’m giving this return a 5.
