The Story of the Autograph

Jon Koncak, a 7-foot center, may not have been a household name during his time in the NBA, but his career was notable for its longevity, consistency, and impact. Known for his defensive prowess and ability to contribute in the paint, Koncak carved out a respectable role in the league, particularly with the Atlanta Hawks. Despite being often overshadowed by flashier stars, Koncak’s steady presence on the court and the unique trajectory of his career made him an important part of the teams he played for.

Jon Francis Koncak was born on May 17, 1963, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He grew up in Missouri and from an early age, his height and athletic ability made him a standout in basketball. Koncak attended Southern Methodist University (SMU), where he played college basketball for the SMU Mustangs. During his time at SMU, he developed a reputation as a skilled defensive player and a strong rebounder, traits that would define his professional career. Koncak’s impressive performance at SMU caught the attention of NBA scouts, and he was considered one of the top prospects in the 1985 NBA Draft. He was particularly praised for his work ethic and defensive capabilities, which made him a coveted pick for teams looking to bolster their frontcourt.

In the 1985 NBA Draft, Jon Koncak was selected by the Atlanta Hawks as the fifth overall pick. While his draft position indicated high expectations, Koncak’s NBA career would be defined more by his defensive abilities and role-playing rather than as a dominant offensive force. Koncak’s first few seasons with the Hawks saw him primarily come off the bench as a defensive specialist. He was tasked with guarding some of the league’s top centers and power forwards, and his size and footwork made him a valuable asset in defending the rim.

While not a prolific scorer, Koncak’s ability to block shots and grab rebounds earned him consistent playing time, especially as the Hawks looked to solidify their defense. One of the most notable moments of Koncak’s career came in 1989, when he signed a six-year, $13 million contract with the Hawks. This contract was groundbreaking at the time, as it made Koncak one of the highest-paid players in the league—despite not being a star player. The deal raised eyebrows across the NBA and earned him the nickname “Jon Contract.” While the contract became a point of discussion among fans and analysts, it underscored the value that the Hawks saw in Koncak’s role as a defensive anchor.

Koncak spent nearly his entire career with the Atlanta Hawks, from 1985 to 1995. Over his 10 seasons with the team, he played alongside some of the league’s most talented players, including Dominique Wilkins. Koncak’s ability to defend and rebound was crucial in complementing the Hawks’ fast-paced, high-scoring offense.

During his time in Atlanta, Koncak averaged 4.6 points, five rebounds, and 1 block per game. While his numbers were modest, his value lay in his ability to come off the bench and make an immediate defensive impact. He was often called upon to guard the likes of Hakeem Olajuwon, Patrick Ewing, and other dominant big men of the era.

In 1995, after a decade with the Hawks, Jon Koncak finished his NBA career with the Orlando Magic. He played just one season with the team before retiring in 1996. Over his 11-year career, Koncak played in 784 games, earning a reputation as a reliable and selfless player who was willing to do the dirty work on defense.

After retiring from professional basketball, Jon Koncak largely stayed out of the public eye, choosing a more private life. He remained involved with the game on occasion, participating in basketball clinics and mentoring young players. His post-playing life has been defined by his commitment to family and community, though he remains a beloved figure among Atlanta Hawks fans.

This is my second successful return from him. To see the other return, check out my post from April 2023.

The Score on Jon Koncak – 6.0

I can’t really say that Jon has a small signature, but it doesn’t completely fill the card. But also, if there were a signature to height ratio, his would be high (or low… can’t remember how that works). I think the nature of the images on basketball cards got him on this one. All except for the 1990 Skybox. I mean, that’s just a black card and there’s not much he can do about that one.

Thanks Mr. Koncak! I’m giving this return a 6 overall.
