The Story of the Autograph

John Russell is a former catcher, outfielder and manager in the major leagues. He played from 1984 to 1993 with the Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves, and Texas Rangers. He managed the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2008 to 2010

Russell is a native of Oklahoma. The Expos drafted him in the fourth round of the 1979 MLB Draft but he chose not to sign and instead went to play college baseball for the University of Oklahoma. In 1982 he was taken by the Phillies in the first round of the MLB Draft with the thirteenth overall pick. He made his major league debut for them two years later on June 22, 1984.

He was mostly a backup wherever he played. He played the most games in his career in 1985 and 1986 with 81 and 93 games respectively. His best season might have been that 1986 season when he got the most chances to play. He put up a .241 average with a career high 13 homers and 60 RBI.

After his playing career was over he worked as a minor league manager for the Twins organization. He moved to the major leagues as a coach with the the Pirates and then later as their manager. In more recent seasons he work with the Baltimore Orioles from 2011 to 2018.

The Score on John Russell – 6.5

John has a pretty active signature, both loopy and zig zaggy at the same time. I don’t think it’s a signature where you recognize his name in it really. He used a great marker on these and it really stands out well on each of these cards. A bit less on the 1990 Donruss, but it’s hard to stick out with the dark on dark on that one.

Thanks Mr. Russell! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
