The Story of the Autograph
John Kruk played first base and outfield in the majors for the Padres, Phillies and White Sox from 1986 to 1995. He’s a three-time All-Star known for his sense of humor. After retiring he been part of national TV broadcasts with ESPN and these days works on the Phillies broadcasts.
Kruk was born and raised in West Virginia. After high school he went to Potomac State College and then Allegany Community College and is the first major leaguer to come out of Allegany. He was drafted by the Padres in 1981 and spent several years in their minor league system. He eventually debuted in April of 1986 for them. The next year he broke out with a .313 average, 20 home runs, 91 RBI and, unbelievably now when you look at him, 18 stolen bases.
In 1989 the Padres dealt Kruk to the Phillies. He turned into an All-Star performer and primarily played first base, making the All-Star team from 1991-1993. In 1993 he famously feigned heart palpitations against Randy Johnson in the All-Star game after Johnson threw a fastball over his head to the backstop. He played for the Phillies when they made it to the World Series in 1993 against the Blue Jays and lost.
In 1994 Kruk was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He also gained a lot of weight and had knee problems from the Vets Stadium astro turf. He went to Chicago as a free agent and played as a DH for the White Sox. He retired after taking himself out of a game after a single in the first inning at Camden Yards in July of 1995 citing his knee issues.
The Score on John Kruk – 7.5
I really didn’t think I’d ever get these back. The fact that they came back at all is great, but what’s even better is that Krukie has a great signature. Its a really clean signature and he used a great marker. I need to maybe try again with some more interesting cards. I just sent some lesser ones just in case.
Thanks Mr. Kruk! I’m giving these a 7.5.
