The Story of the Autograph

John Alt is a former tackle in the National Football League (NFL). His football career is a story of resilience, determination, and excellence on the offensive line. As one of the premier tackles of his era, Alt became a cornerstone of the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive line, protecting quarterbacks and paving the way for running backs during a period when the Chiefs were consistently competitive. The Second-Team All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowler played his entire career in Kansas City is a member of the team’s Hall of Fame.

Born on May 30, 1962, in Stuttgart, West Germany, Alt’s journey to NFL stardom is a testament to hard work and a deep understanding of the game. He was born into a military family, with his father serving in the United States Army. This meant that Alt spent his early years in various locations before his family eventually settled in Columbia Heights, Minnesota. It was there that Alt began to shine as an athlete, excelling in football at Columbia Heights High School.

Alt’s talent on the football field earned him a scholarship to the University of Iowa, where he initially played as a tight end. However, his coaches quickly recognized his potential as an offensive lineman, and he was moved to tackle, a position where he would ultimately make his mark. Under the guidance of legendary coach Hayden Fry, Alt developed into one of the best linemen in the Big Ten, earning All-Big Ten honors and setting the stage for his entry into the NFL.

He was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round of the 1984 NFL Draft, with the 21st overall pick. The Chiefs, recognizing Alt’s potential, saw him as a key piece in rebuilding their offensive line. Over the next 13 seasons, Alt would prove to be a wise investment. He quickly established himself as a dominant force at left tackle, a position that requires both size and agility to protect the quarterback’s blindside. Standing 6 feet 8 inches tall and weighing about 300 pounds, Alt possessed the physical attributes necessary to excel at the position. But it was his technique, intelligence, and work ethic that truly set him apart.

During his career with the Chiefs, Alt was a two-time Pro Bowl selection, earning the honor in 1992 and 1993. He was also named a second-team All-Pro in 1990. Alt’s presence on the offensive line helped the Chiefs become one of the top teams in the AFC during the 1990s, and he played a crucial role in the success of running backs like Christian Okoye and Marcus Allen.

Alt’s consistency and durability were hallmarks of his career. Despite the physical demands of the position, he managed to play in 179 games over 13 seasons, starting 149 of them. His leadership and experience were invaluable to the Chiefs, particularly as the team transitioned through different coaching staffs and offensive schemes.

After retiring from professional football following the 1996 season, John Alt remained connected to the sport, particularly through his children. His son, Mark Alt, pursued a career in professional hockey, while his other son, Joe Alt, followed in his father’s footsteps and became a standout offensive lineman at the University of Notre Dame.

John Alt has also been involved in various charitable activities, leveraging his platform as a former NFL player to give back to the community. His contributions to the Kansas City area and his involvement in youth sports have made him a respected figure both on and off the field.

This is my fourth successful return from him. To see the other successful returns, check out these posts:

I’ve probably said this before about John’s signature, but for a guy with just seven letters in his name, he puts a good amount of ink on your cards. I think most of these are ones that I have, but you know how the TTM addiction goes if you read this blog regularly. I think the one I like best in here is the ’94 Score card.

Thanks Mr. Alt! I’m giving this return a 7.
