The Story of the Autograph

Jimmy Carson’s ascent in the world of professional hockey was meteoric. Born on July 20, 1968, in Southfield, Michigan, Carson’s early exposure to the sport and innate talent set the stage for a remarkable career.

Carson’s passion for hockey ignited at a young age. He honed his skills with the Verdun Junior Canadiens in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, showcasing a potent combination of speed and a precise shot. His prowess caught the attention of NHL scouts, leading to his selection as the second overall pick by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft.

At just 18, Carson made an immediate impact in the NHL. In his rookie season (1986–87), he tallied 37 goals and 42 assists, earning a spot on the NHL All-Rookie Team. The following season, he elevated his performance, recording 55 goals and 52 assists. This feat made him the second teenager in NHL history, after Wayne Gretzky, to score 50 goals in a single season. His 107 points that season set a record for American-born players at the time.

In August 1988, Carson became a central figure in one of the most monumental trades in sports history. The Kings traded him, along with other assets, to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Wayne Gretzky. Despite the immense pressure of replacing a legend, Carson delivered an impressive 49 goals and 51 assists in his first season with the Oilers.

After a brief stint with the Oilers, Carson requested a trade and was sent to his hometown team, the Detroit Red Wings, in 1989. Over four seasons, he consistently contributed, including a standout performance on December 27, 1989, where he scored three power-play goals in a single period—a franchise record.

Carson returned to the Kings in 1993, playing alongside Gretzky once more. He later had brief tenures with the Vancouver Canucks and Hartford Whalers. Concluding his professional playing career, he joined the Detroit Vipers of the International Hockey League, helping them secure the Turner Cup in 1997.

Over his NHL career, Carson played 626 games, amassing 275 goals and 286 assists.

Anticipating life after hockey, Carson pursued certifications in financial planning during his playing days. Post-retirement, he established a successful career in financial services, working with firms like Northwestern Mutual and Allstate Financial Services.

Residing in the Metro Detroit area with his wife, Paula, and their four children, Carson remains connected to the sport. He participates in alumni games and charitable events, reflecting his enduring passion for hockey and community engagement.

Jimmy Carson’s journey through the NHL is a testament to talent, adaptability, and foresight. From a record-setting teenager to a seasoned professional and successful financial advisor, his story resonates as one of dedication both on and off the ice.

Jimmy is a guy that I never feel like I have a lot of cards for when it’s time to send to him. Except maybe one time that you see below. But most times I feel like I am scrounging to find some cards when I see he is signing other’s cards. You can see that he personalizes everything and consistently signs in blue.

Thanks Mr. Carson! I’m giving these returns a 6.5 overall.

These are not my first returns from him. To see my first return from him, check out this post from June 2023.
