The Story of the Autograph
Jim Willoughby is a former right-handed pitcher who worked mostly in relief during his eight year career. He pitched for the San Francisco Giants, Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox from 1971 to 1978.
Willoughby was born and raised in California. He played multiple sports in high school and was drafted by the Giants in the eleventh round of the 1967 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut at the end of the 1978 season on September 5th. He started the next year back in the minors but made it back to the bigs before the season was out.
After some lesser seasons, the Giants traded Willoughby to the Red Sox as a player to be name later from a previous deal in the middle of the 1975 season. He finished the season well and was part of the Red Sox team that made it to the World Series and ultimately lost to the Reds. 1976 wasn’t a great season record-wise at 3-12 but he did have a 2.86 ERA and saved 10 games. His role was reduced the next season and he went on the disabled list for the first time after breaking his ankle.
He moved on to the White Sox for his final season in 1978 after being sold to Chicago by the Red Sox. He would move on to the Cardinals via trade at the end of the season, then later to the Cubs and the Pirates. He actually made it to the active roster for the Pirates during their 1979 World Series Championship season but never appeared in a game.
The Score on Jim Willoughby – 6.5
Jim has a somewhat standard signature. The one thing I notice about the style is that it seems to get a bit bigger and more wild at the end of it. Some of that might have to do with the letters at the end but I think on the 1978 card it might have something to do with running out of room too.
Thanks Mr. Willoughby! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
