The Story of the Autograph
Jim Leyritz is a former player in the major leagues who played at catcher, first and third. He’s primarily known for being a New York Yankee where he played from 1990-1996 and then again in the 1999 and 2000 seasons. But he also played with the Anaheim Angels, Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox, San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Leyritz was born and raised in Ohio and then attended Middle Georgia College. He later transferred to the University of Kentucky. After his 1985 season as a Wildcat he was not drafted and the Yankees signed him as a free agent. He made his debut with the Yankees on June 8, 1990.
While he’s best known as playing with the Yankees, he’s even better known for a couple of huge postseason home runs. One was a walk-off against the Mariners in Game 2 of the 1995 ALDS against the Mariners. The second, and an even bigger moment, occured in Game 4 of the 1996 World Series. In that game against the Braves he hit a three-run bomb in a comeback win. After being with a couple of other teams he would be back with the Yankees for World Series runs in 1999 and 2000.

I really like Jim’s signature. It’s pretty big and he used a really thick marker to make it stick out. I like his little “z” at the end of it which is best on the 1990 Upper Deck card. Unfortunately the 1991 Upper Deck is just way to dark to take the signature well. The one thing I find funny is on the 1991 Score card where he’s playing catcher but the card says “3B”.
