The Story of the Autograph

Jim Colbron is a former right-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. His career spanned ten seasons from 1969 to 1978. During that time he played for the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, Kansas City Royals, and Seattle Mariners.

Colborn is a native of California. He went to the University of Washington and Whittier College and got a degree in sociology before heading to Scotland to go to the University of Edinburgh. He played basketball and baseball while there and was All-Scotland. The Cubs then signed him as an amateur free agent in 1967. He played mostly as a reliever for the Cubs and was traded in December of 1971 to the Brewers with Brock Davis and Earl Stephenson for Jose Cardenal.

After a .500 first season he went 20-12 with a 3.18 ERA in 43 games with 36 starts. That was his best major league season an earned him his one and only All-Star appearance. He would be a losing pitcher for his remaining years in Milwaukee until moving on to Kansas City.

In 1976 he was traded with Darrell Porter to the Royals for Jamie Quirk, Jim Wohlford and later Bob McClure. He went 18-14 in that first season with the Royals with a 3.62 ERA in 36 games with 35 starts. The following season the Royals traded him to the Mariners for Steve Braun. That would be his final season in the majors.

Later he was a pitching coach with the Dodgers and Pirates, then as a bullpen coach with the Rangers.

Jim doesn’t have a super small signature, but it’s on the small side of signatures relatively. Most of these cards really show of the signature pretty well. I like the signature best on the 1979 Topps card, but I think the best card/signature combo is the 1975 Topps card. I just love that old pitcher pose.

Thanks Mr. Colborn! I’m giving this return a 7.
