The Story of the Autograph
Jerry Dipoto is a former pitcher and current general manager. He spent eight years as a player with the Indians, Mets, and Rockies. As a general manager he’s worked with the Diamondbacks and Angels and currently is with the Mariners.
Dipoto was born and raised in New Jersey and then attended college at Virginia Commonwealth University where he played baseball for the Rams. The Indians drafted him in the third round of the 1989 MLB Draft and he made his major league debut for them on May 11, 1993. He moved to both the Mets and the Rockies via trade.
His rookie season was solid with an ERA of 2.40, a 4-4 record and 11 saves in 46 games, but he would play a lot less in 1994. After the Indians traded him to the Mets for the 1995 season he would have more than 50 appearances every year until his final year in 2000. I think one of his best seasons came in 1998 in Colorado where he pitched 68 games in relief and put up a 3-4 record, 3.53 ERA, and saved 19 games.
After his career he immediately went into front office and scouting work. He was part of the Red Sox scouting staff for their 2004 World Series and worked through the ranks until the Diamondbacks made him their GM for 2010 on an interim basis. He moved on to the Angels the next year but had a contentious relationship with Mike Scioscia and resigned in 2015. Later than same year he was hired by the Mariners.
The Score on Jerry Dipoto – 6.5
I actually have an old return (prior to the blog) of that 1994 Score card and this one is definitely better. It’s seems these days Jerry signs a bit bigger on the cards which I always like. I really love the pictures of the ballparks in this year’s set for this types of signatures.
Thanks Mr. Dipoto! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
