The Story of the Autograph
Jeffrey Scott Reed, born on November 12, 1962, in Joliet, Illinois, carved out a commendable 17-year career in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a reliable catcher known for his defensive prowess and leadership. While he may not have been a household name, Reed’s consistent presence and contributions to multiple teams underscore the vital role of dependable players in the sport.
Reed’s baseball journey began when the Minnesota Twins selected him as the 12th overall pick in the first round of the 1980 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut on April 5, 1984, with the Twins, marking the start of a career that would span nearly two decades. Throughout his tenure in MLB, Reed played for several teams, including the Montreal Expos, Cincinnati Reds, San Francisco Giants, Colorado Rockies, and Chicago Cubs.
One of Reed’s most memorable moments came on September 16, 1988, when he caught Tom Browning’s perfect game for the Cincinnati Reds—a rare and significant achievement in baseball history. Reed’s role was pivotal; his game-calling and composure were instrumental in guiding Browning through the game’s tense final innings.
In 1990, Reed was part of the Reds team that clinched the World Series title, sweeping the Oakland Athletics. Although he primarily served as a backup catcher, his contributions throughout the season were valuable to the team’s success.
Over his MLB career, Reed played in 1,234 games, amassing 774 hits, 61 home runs, and 323 RBIs, with a batting average of .250 and an on-base percentage of .334.
After retiring from professional play, Reed transitioned into coaching, bringing his wealth of experience to the next generation of players. In December 2018, he was appointed as the head baseball coach at Providence Academy, where he emphasized character development and excellence both on and off the field.
Jeff Reed’s career may not have been adorned with individual accolades, but his steady presence, defensive skills, and leadership exemplify the essential qualities that contribute to a team’s cohesion and success. His journey serves as a testament to the impact of dedicated role players in the fabric of baseball history.
The Score on Jeff Reed – 6.5
Jeff always has a pretty good size and style to his signature. But one thing I always see in Jeff autographs is that his markers never seem to be really strong. Some are obviously better than others. I used to chalk it up to maybe being at the end of the line of requests he signs, but that wouldn’t happen every time.
Thanks Mr. Reed! I’m going give these a 6.5.
These aren’t the first returns I’ve received from him. To see the others, check out these posts:
