The Story of the Autograph

Jay Tibbs is a former right-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1984 to 1990 with the Cincinnati Reds, Montreal Expos, Baltimore Orioles, and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Tibbs was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. In his senior year of high school he was named Alabama’s High School Player of the Year. That put him on the draft radar of the New York Mets who drafted him in the second round of the 1980 MLB Draft. But he would make his major league debut with the Mets. He was redrafted and traded before that. In 1983 Philadelphia took him in the rule 5 draft but ended up returning him to the Mets. Then in 1984 he was traded to the Reds for Bruce Berenyi.

He made his debut not that long after on July 15, 1984. He played the next two seasons with the Reds before second of four trades in his career. With that trade he moved on to the Expos in a deal that returned Sal Butera and Bill Gullickson. The Expos later traded him to the Orioles in 1988 and then the Orioles traded him to the Pirates in the middle of the 1990 season.

Tibbs didn’t have a tremendous amount of success in his career. He only had two winning records in his career: 6-2 in 1984 and 5-0 in 1989. His overall stats in his career are a 39-54 record with a 4.20 ERA in 133 career starts.

The Score on Jay Tibbs – 6.0

Jay scrunches his signature together and consistently puts it in the bottom right corner of the card. I think that then impacts how well it comes out on the card based on what’s going on with that card. I prefer someone’s autograph be centered, but I think in the end that isn’t the biggest of my preferences in what I like to see. My main preference is ink on the cards.

Thanks Mr. Tibbs! I’m giving this return a 6.
