The Story of the Autograph
Jair Jurrjens is a former Major League pitcher from Curacao. He was in the majors from 2007 to 2014 and played for the Tigers, Braves, Orioles and Rockies, with the vast majority of that time being in Atlanta. He’s pitched professionally in China and was part of Team Netherlands in the 2017 WBC. These days you can find him on Long Island pitching for the Long Island Ducks of independent minor league baseball.
Jurrjens was signed by the Tigers in 2003 as an amateur free agent. He worked his way through the Tigers system and pitched really great along the way. He made his debut in August of 2007 against Cleveland and became the first pitcher from Curacao to make it to the majors. The Tigers traded him to the Braves after the season with another player for Edgar Renteria. Before the start of the 2008 season he was the 3rd best prospect in the Braves system.
With the Braves, Jair put together some good years but they tended to be the story of two halves. For instance, in his rookie year of 2008 he started out great prior to the All-Star break and went 9-4 with a 3.00 ERA. Then in the second half of the season he went 4-6 with a 4.66 ERA. Still 13-10 for the season and a Rookie of the Month in June was good enough to put him in the hunt for Rookie of the Year. He would finish third in the voting to Geovany Soto and Joey Votto.
He went 14-10 the next year, but it was the opposite with a .500 record in the first half and a 7-3 record in the second half. 2011 was his first and only All-Star appearance. He started that year on the DL, but ended up leading the league in ERA at the break. He’d end the year at 13-6 with a 2.66 ERA.
In 2012 he was demoted for the first time with the Braves and that was kind of the start of a little of a downhill slide. He would bounce around a lot, sometimes not making a club and really only made it with the Orioles on a one year deal, and then pitched a bit for the Rockies after a trade.
The Score on Jair Jurrjens – 7.5
Jair has a bit of a wild signature, but with the over-abundance of “J”s in his name it really works. It looks like he kind of focuses on the three “J”s and then sort of draws a figure eight around the whole thing. Then he adds a widdle bitty version of his number on there. I love the style and he makes it a great size without it being so big it covers his face or something. I marked it down slightly for the way the marker came out but I would bet that it’s because he does it somewhat quickly.
Thanks Mr. Jurrjens! I’m giving these a 7.5.
