The Story of the Autograph
Herschel Walker is best known as a former running back who is a Heisman Trophy winner and College Football Hall of Fame inductee. He played professionally in the USFL with the New Jersey Generals and later in the NFL with the Cowboys, Vikings, Eagles, and Giants in a career that spanned 1983 through 1997.
Walker was born and raised in Georgia with his six siblings. He was a standout star in football, basketball and track while in high school. He helped his school to a state championship in his senior year. After graduating from high school as the valedictorian, he went on to attend college at Georgia where he continued to excel. He is the only player to finish in the top three in Heisman voting in his only three collegiate seasons and the only player to finish in the top ten in rushing in his only three seasons.
He set the NCAA freshman rushing record in his first year and finished third in the Heisman voting. He also became the first “true freshman” to become a first-team All-American. Georgia was undefeated that season and won the National Championship. He continued to be amazing in his next two seasons and won the Heisman in 1982.
He went on to the USFL, which allowed players to enter after their junior year of college. The USFL actually changed that rule as well as others to get Walker into the league. He didn’t disappoint and won the rushing title in 1983 and 1985. The Cowboys selected him in the 1985 NFL Draft thinking that the USFL would be disbanded. By 1986 he was playing in the backfield with Tony Dorsett to make the second Heisman winning tandem backfield in NFL history.
Walker wasn’t happy to have to play so many different positions in the offense though and made his feelings known to the Cowboys. In 1989 they traded him to the Vikings for five players and six draft picks. The deal led to the turnaround of the Cowboys as it essentially brought them Emmitt Smith, Russell Maryland, Kevin Smith and Darren Woodson.
While the Vikings thought this would be what put them over the edge to be a Super Bowl team, it didn’t quite happen that way. The trade became one of the most lopsided in league history. He had an amazing first game and it was all down hill after that as the team would eventually question his commitment to football.
He moved on to other teams and had on more good year in Philadelphia in 1992, but never quite what he was.
The Score on Herschel Walker – 7.0
Herschel has a good signature and it came out pretty well on this card. Sometimes 1991 Pacific doesn’t go so well for me so I’m glad this one came out well. He personalized it and inscribed it with a bible verse, at least I think he did. It’s a little tough to make out. His signature is fancy, but maybe a little too fancy to make out.
Thanks Mr. Walker! I’m giving this one a 7.
