The Story of the Autograph
Hensley Meulens is a Curacaoan baseball player who played from 1989 through 2000 in both Major League Baseball as well as Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan and the Korea Baseball Organization. In MLB he played for the Yankees, Expos and Diamondbacks while in NPB he played for the Chiba Lotte Marines, Yakult Swallos and the SK Wyverns in the KBO.
While Meulens was a right handed hitter and thrower, he would hit homers left-handed as a teenager and earned the nickname “Bam Bam” (like the Flintstones character).
He was signed by the Yankees in 1985. He made his first appearance with the Yankees on April 9, 1989. He never really found a place on the team though. In his first season he played third base but would mostly play in the outfield after that. He saw the most time in 1991 when he appeared in 96 games and hit .222 with six homers and 29 RBI.
These days he coaches for the San Francisco Giants and he’s been there quite a while at this point. As he got there in 2010 he’s seen them win three World Series as their hitting coach.
The Score on Hensley Meulens – 5.5
I have an old autograph from Hensley and it doesn’t include the “SIR”. It seems he was knighted in 2012. So not only do you get one of the best names on your card (“Bam Bam”) but you also get the fact that he’s knighted now.
Thanks Mr Meulens! I’m giving this one a 5.5
