The Story of the Autograph
Grant Jackson pitched in the major leagues from 1965 through 1982. Over that long career he pitched for six teams: Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York (Yankees), Pittsburgh (two stints), Montreal and Kansas City. For most of his career he was in the bullpen but he did spend a few years in Philadelphia as a starter.
Jackson grew up in Ohio and went on to attend Bowling Green State University. In 1961 he signed as a free agent with the Phillies and after a few years in the minors he made his debut in September of 1965. Those first couple years he only made a handful of appearances with the big ballclub. It wasn’t until 1967 that he started to spend significant time in the majors. In 1969 he made his first and only All-Star game but he didn’t appear in the game.
He was traded to Baltimore after the 1970 season and after his time there (six years) he was traded a few times, drafted in an expansion draft, and really bounced around a lot. In fact he moved around so much that he was on a team he didn’t even end up playing for (the Mariners). The only exception to that bouncing around was the time he spent in his first stint in Pittsburgh. He was there from 1977-81 and won the 1979 World Series with the Pirates. He was the winning pitcher in Game 7 of that Series.
The Score on Grant Jackson – 4.5
Grant has a cool looking signature based on the facsimile signature on the 1980 Topps. What he signed on that card resembles that in a way. But where he signed on that card is tough because it’s so dark. Then if you look at the ’82 Donruss, it just doesn’t look the same. The “J” resembles it, but he signs his first name a lot differently than he did in the past. I really like the old circle-style “G” that he did back then, at least for the card anyway. The dark card and then the smudge on the Donruss card just knock down the score on this one.
Thanks Mr. Jackson! I’m giving these a 4.5.
