Born on February 23, 1967, in Willowdale, Ontario, Canada, Gord Murphy honed his skills in the Ontario Hockey League with the Oshawa Generals. His dedication and performance caught the attention of the Philadelphia Flyers, who selected him 189th overall in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft. Murphy began his professional career with the Hershey Bears, the Flyers’ AHL affiliate, during the 1987-88 season. His NHL debut came the following season with the Flyers, marking the start of a 14-season tenure in the league.

Murphy’s NHL career spanned four teams: the Philadelphia Flyers, Boston Bruins (twice), Florida Panthers, and Atlanta Thrashers. Known for his steady defensive play and ability to contribute offensively, he accumulated 85 goals and 238 assists over 862 regular-season games. One of his career highlights was being part of the 1995-96 Florida Panthers team that advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals.

After retiring in 2002, Murphy seamlessly transitioned into coaching. He began as an assistant coach with the Columbus Blue Jackets, serving from 2002 to 2010. Subsequent coaching roles included positions with the Florida Panthers and the Philadelphia Flyers. In 2019, he joined the Hartford Wolf Pack, the AHL affiliate of the New York Rangers, as an associate head coach. His coaching journey came full circle when he was named an assistant coach for the New York Rangers in 2021.

Murphy’s influence extends beyond the rink. He and his wife, Nicole, have three children, including son Connor Murphy, who followed in his father’s footsteps to become an NHL defenseman, currently playing for the Chicago Blackhawks. Their shared experiences in professional hockey have strengthened their bond and underscored the family’s dedication to the sport.

Gord did a really great job on these cards. Considering the black on the uniform and the busy pictures, they came out great. My favorite is definitely the 1991 Pro Set card. That one has that little bit of white gradient on there that helps it out. Unfortunately these aren’t new cards I had him sign, these will all be dupes.
