The Story of the Autograph
Glenn Hoffman played shortstop in the majors from 1980 through 1989. He played with the Red Sox for the majority of his career (1980-1987) and then spent 1987 with the Dodgers and 1989 with the Angels. After his playing days he managed the Dodgers (for a sort time) and then was a coach with the Dodgers and now the Padres since 2006.
The Red Sox drafted Hoffman in the second round of the 1976 draft. He was primarily a shortstop but also played other infield positions too. He only played in more than 100 times three times with the Red Sox (the only three times he did so in his career). While his best years were with Boston, he never only averaged .245, with single digit homers (maybe four per year) and about 40 ish RBI.
The Red Sox traded him to the Dodgers in 1987 and he returned to the Red Sox the next year. He spent the entire ’88 season in the minors. Then in ’89 he signed with the Angels.
He managed the Dodgers for 88 games in 1998 after the team fired Bill Russell and brought in Tommy Lasorda in the front office. The finished third in the NL West, which was where they were when he came in. The next year Davey Johnson came in to manage the team and Glenn stuck around as a third base coach. Since 2006 he’s been with the Padres and has been a coach for four different managers.
You might know Glenn’s kid brother, Trevor. He was like the all-time saves leader or something like that.
The Score on Glenn Hoffman – 6.5
Glenn as a good signature and it came out pretty well on all these cards. I usually don’t like to send my best cards out for signature so I’ll pick an off-center one or something like that even though I normally only send doubles anyway, but the ’81 Topps I sent is terrible. It’s off-center but that bottom cut is pretty bad. The signatures actually came out best on the three oldest cards.
Thanks Mr. Hoffman! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
