The Story of the Autograph
Geoff Zahn pitched for 13 season in Major League Baseball. He started out with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1973 and ended up back in Southern California to finish his career with the Angels in 1985. In between those two stops he also spent time in Chicago with the Cubs and in Minnesota with the Twins.
Zahn was born in Baltimore, MD but went to high school in Toledo, OH. He went on to play for the Wolverines at the University of Michigan. In 1968 the Dodgers made him the their fifth round draft choice. Prior to the Dodgers drafting him he was drafted by the White Sox (1966), Red Sox (1967), and Tigers (1967) but never signed. He spent six years in the minors and made his major league debut as a September call-up on September 2, 1973. He mostly pitched in relieve in L.A. until 1975 when he was traded with another player for Burt Hooton.
But his best year came toward the end of his career with the Angels. In 1982 the Angels had a strong team and won the AL West. Zahn had an 18-8 record that year with a 3.73 ERA in 34 starts. He started one game and lost to the Brewers in the ALCS only making it 3.2 innings and giving up three earned runs.
The Score on Geoff Zahn – 6.0
I think Geoff as an interesting autograph. To me it kind of looks like a signature you’d see on the Declaration of Independence or something like that. It’s both stylish and maybe a little shaky. The 1980 Topps card really didn’t come out well. That’s a problem you’ll see on older cards from time to time. Either the card is absorbing a little too much in or it’s not absorbing enough, but I’m not sure which. I like the others even if some of them are a bit busy.
Thanks Mr. Zahn! I’m giving these a 6.
