The Story of the Autograph
Gary Sutherland was a second baseman in the major leagues from 1966 through 1978. He jumped around to different teams a lot and never played more than three years with any team. He played for the Phillies, Expos, Astros, Tigers, Brewers, Padres, and Cardinals.
Sutherland, or Sudsy, was born in Glendale, CA and was the son of a pitcher in the minor leagues and the brother of a pitcher in the major leagues. He went to USC and was signed by the Phillies after his sophomore year in 1964. After two years he made it to The Show with the Phils. He started out as a utility player and played everywhere but pitcher and catcher. He moved on to Montreal where he had some disappointing seasons at the plate, but manager Gene Mauch always showed confidence in him. While he may not have been a great hitter (which the .243 lifetime average tells you) he was a great fielder. In 19699 he led the NL second basemen in double plays turned with 110.
He spent a lot of time in the minors with the Astros and then was traded to the Tigers. He made it as their starting second baseman and played more games in a year than he ever had before. But then he tailed off again through the rest of his career at the plate and in the field and that hurt him. He kept bouncing around for the last few years of his career.
The Score on Gary Sutherland – 6.5
I’ve noticed this some with some recent returns from older players, but Gary has a pretty out there signature. I only say that because usually the older players have a really clean signature and you can really tell who is signing it. Gary’s signature leans a little more to the abstract which is what you kind of get from today’s players more often. I really like how big his signature is though.
Thanks Mr. Sutherland! I’m giving this on a 6.5.
