The Story of the Autograph

Gary Ross was a right-handed starter and reliever in MLB from 1968 through 1977. He pitched with the Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres and California Angels.

Ross was drafted by the Braves in 1966 in the 33rd round. We don’t even get up to 33 rounds in fantasy leagues these days so I can’t even imagine that for drafting players. But he didn’t sign with them and appeared in the draft again in 1967 were the Cubs drafted him in the first round with the seventh overall pick. He made his major league debut with the Cubs on June 28, 1968, but he didn’t last too long in Chicago. The Cubs traded him to the Padres in April of 1969.

Ross spent the majority of his career in San Diego (1969 through 1974). In that first year with the Padres he lost a club-record 11 consecutive decisions. But the Padres were in their first year as an expansion team and lost a total of 110 times that year so it’s not surprising. He was only 3-12 that year in San Diego wit a 4.19 ERA. His best year was probably 1972 when he went 4-3 with a 2.45 ERA in 60 games over 91 innings.

The Score on Gary Ross – 5.5

Gary has a bit of a small autograph which is kind of accentuated by the thin marker he used. “G” is always a great letter to have in your name especially as a capital. Gary certainly does a pretty good one of those but then the autograph kind of falls of during his last name. I really love this old Padre jersey he’s wearing in this 1970 card.

Thanks Mr. Ross! I’m giving this one a 5.5.
