The Story of the Autograph
Gary Roenicke is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played for the Expos, Orioles, Yankees and Braves in 12 seasons from 1976 through 1988.
Roenicke was born and raised in Covina, California. The Montreal Expos drafted him with the eighth pick in the first round of the 1973 MLB Draft. After a few years in the minors that included an Eastern League MVP award in 1975, he made his major league debut on June 8, 1976. He wasn’t back in the majors in 1977 and was traded to the Baltimore Orioles (a deal that included Bryn Smith, another of my TTM successes).
It’s with Baltimore that Roenicke made his mark. He had his two best season there in 1979 (when they lost to the Pirates in the World Series), and 1982 (a year before they won it all). But his numbers started to decline and he was traded to the Yankees for Rex Hudler. He finished his career as a bench player with the Yankees and Braves and was released by the Braves in July of 1988 and retired.
These days he works as an advisor for the Western Canadian Baseball League and a scout for the Orioles. His brother Ron also played baseball and is currently the manager of the Boston Red Sox.
The Score on Gary Roenicke – 6.5
Gary has a pretty good signature. I think it came out a bit better on the Fleer card because there’s kind of a skip to the end of his signature on the Topps card. I also think I like the Fleer card better because it’s an Orioles card. When you think of a guy as being part of a particular team I think there’s a tendency to make that one a little more special because it represents him better. Plus he has that plastic suit on under his jersey so….
Thanks Mr. Roenicke! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
