The Story of the Autograph
Gary Plummer played as a linebacker in both the USFL and the NFL from 1983 through 1997. He played with the Oakland Invaders, the San Diego Chargers, and the San Francisco 49ers. He’s a California guy that was able to stay in California.
Plummer went to junior college first at Ohlone College and then transferred to Cal-Berkeley. In 1983 he went undrafted by the NFL. That led him to playing with the Oakland Invaders of the USFL. He played for three years there and made an appearance in the USFL Championship in 1985. But the USFL folded in 1985 and the San Diego Chargers signed him. With the Chargers he immediately became a starting in his first season and went on to start 106 of the 119 game he played with San Diego.
In 1994, Gary signed with the San Francisco 49ers. He finished out his career in San Francisco and was a member of the 49ers team that beat the Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX. He finished out his career with over 1,000 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 6 interceptions.

Gary has a pretty interesting autograph. The last part of his “G” is a big loop backwards. It looks like it’s meant to mix into another part of his signature, but it really doesn’t. I also notice that the “Pl” didn’t really come out the same every time. There obviously more definition in his first name than his last. Overall these are strong. That marker is really thick which I am not always a fan of, but in Gary’s case I think it fits. The most important part is that it doesn’t look like it’s running out or anything like that.
One thing to note is that Gary wrote back to me and said he normally only signs two but in this case he signed three for me. I sent five cards and he kept those and give them to teachers to give to students in schools. I’m down with that.
