The Story of the Autograph
Gary Lucas pitched in the majors for eight seasons from 1980 through 1987. He pitched for the Padres, Expos and Angels.
Lucas was drafted way back in 1973 by the Cincinnati Reds in the first round of the draft. He never came to contract terms with the Reds however so when he was re-eligible for the draft the Padres picked him in the 19th round of the 1976 draft. There’s a big difference there. But also, not saying he would have made the majors sooner, but he had a shot a making the Big Red Machine if he came to terms with them. He would just miss making the postseason with the Padres too as he moved on to Montreal in 1984.
He made his debut with the Padres in April of 1980 while pitching an inning in relief. He was used mostly as a starter in that rookie season though, but for the rest of his career he was a reliever. In 1981 he led all NL pitchers in appearances with 57. He always had a pretty good ERA with his best being a 2.00 in 1981 and his worst being 3.63 is final year. But he ended up with an overall record of 29-44 wit 63 saves to go with a lifetime ERA of 3.01.
The Score on Gary Lucas – 6.5
I did NOT send out this many. I usually only send out five and I’m sure that was the case this time too. It looks like I got someone else’s cards back along with mine. As for Gary’s signature, it seems to come out a little different on some of tem. The ’85 and ’87 Topps are a lot more condensed and you can’t really tell what he is signing. Some of the others you can tell it’s a “G” and an “L”, like the ’83 Topps. A little small for my taste, but he used a good marker.
Overall I give them a 6.5. Thanks Mr. Lucas!
