The Story of the Autograph

Ethan Horton is a former NFL player who mostly played at tight end but was used some at running back as well. He played from 1985 to 1994 with the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Raiders and Washington Redskins.

Horton is a native of North Carolina. He went to college at UNC Chapel Hill. In his first years there he was a co-MVP in the Gator Bowl (1981) and then co-MVP in the Sun Bowl (1982). He would was an All-ACC running back and the 1984 ACC Player of the Year, rushing for 1,100 yards as a junior and 1,200 yards as a senior. The Chiefs drafted him with the 15th overall pick in the first round of the 1985 NFL Draft.

His rookie year in Kansas City wasn’t good. He had more yard receiving (185) than rushing (146) and the Chiefs considered him a bust. So much so that they cut him at the end of the year. He was out of the league for a year and then he signed with the Raiders in 1987, but they cut him during training camp in 1988 and he was out for another year. But he was back for more in 1989, converted to a tight end.

The change in position paid off when in 1991 he set career highs in receiving yards (650) and touchdowns (5) and earned a trip to the Pro Bowl.

I think this is a good example of thinking about what cards you might be able to have someone sign. With Ethan being in and out of the league and then finally earning a Pro Bowl appearance in 1991, isn’t having a 1991 card of his signed the best thing? I think I always default to which card will show off the signature best, but there’s an element to what card to get signed to as to how it equates to someone’s career.

Thanks Mr. Horton! I’m giving this return a 7.
