The Story of the Autograph

Elroy (Roy) Face is a former pitcher who played in the 50’s and 60’s. He spent the majority of his career in Pittsburgh with the Pirates but ended his career with a year each in Detroit and Montreal. He’s a six-time All-Star and World Series champion.

Face was originally signed by the Phillies in 1949. However, he made his major league debut for the Pirates in April of 1953. But while he pitched in plenty of games that season, he didn’t appear again in the majors until 1955. In 1956 he started a great run of years that went through 1962 where he had some great stats. During that time had years where he set career bests for record (18-1 in 1959), ERA (1.88 in 1962), Games (68 in 1956 and 1960), Games Finished (61 in 1960) and Saves (28 in 1962).

He is in fact the one of the original pioneers of baseball. He wasn’t alone in this regard but he was one of the players that helped to hone what we know now as “The Closer.” He saved three games in the World Series in 1960 against the Yankees and became the first pitcher to do so. Unfortunately, he was the pitcher that helped set up Bill Mazeroski’s famous home run because he game up a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning in Game 7.

He became a carpenter after his baseball career.

This is one that I had seen people get back and I just never had a card to send. He’s such a reliable signer and his signature is really nice. Then I found an oddball card of his in a lot I got off of Craigslist. While I normally only send doubles, it wasn’t a set I was collecting or anything so I thought I should send it off.

Thanks Mr. Face! I’m giving this one a 7.
