The Story of the Autograph
Don Robinson played as both a starter and reliever in his 15 year career in the major leagues. He spent time in Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Anaheim and Philadelphia appearing in 524 career games with 229 career starts. He is a World Series champion and a three-time Silver Slugger.
Robinson started his career on a high note. In 1978, as a 21 year old rookie he went 14-6 with a 3.47 ERA. His winning percentage was second only to the eventual Cy Young winner from that year, Gaylor Perry. Don was named the NL Rookie Pitcher of the Year by The Sporting News and was third in the NL Rookie of the Year voting and finished eighth in the Cy Young voting.
He would follow that up with an eventful 1979 season. While he only got to a .500 record at 8-8, the Pirates won the World Series that year. He pitched in six of their postseason games and won two of them. He would make the World Series again in 1989 with the Giants and won Game 2 of the NLCS against the Cubs to help team to make it there.
Don is known as one of the better hitting pitchers of his time, as evidenced by his Silver Slugger awards in 1982, 1989 and 1990. He hit 13 home runs in his career and became the first pitcher to hit a pinch hit home run since 1971 when he homered against the Padres in 1990.
The Score onĀ Don RobinsonĀ – 6.0
Don as a nice and big signature. I think the unfortunate part of this return is that 1985 Topps card. It almost looks like a completely different pen to the others. It makes me wonder if it was the pen he started with and had to move on to another one for the rest of the cards. My favorite of these cards in the 1983 Topps. I feel like that is the cleanest signature of them all. The 1984 Topps is good, but he did sign his face.
Thanks Mr. Robinson. These get a 6 overall.
