The Story of the Autograph
Don Gullett is a former left-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1970 to 1978 with two teams: the New York Yankees and the Cincinnati Reds.
Gullett is a native of Kentucky. He played baseball, football and basketball in high school and was named all-state in each as a senior. The Reds then drafted him out of high school with the 14th overall pick in the first round of the 1969 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut just one year later on April 10, 1970 after a very impressive Spring Training. He would be part of a pennant winning Reds club that lost to the Orioles in the 1970 World Series.
The Big Red Machine would be back though and Gullet was a great pitcher for them. He only had one losing season in all of his time with the Reds, a 9-10 record in 1972. Overall he was 91-44 with a 3.03 ERA in seven seasons with 236 games and 156 starts. His best seasons were 1971 when he went 16-6 with a 2.65 ERA and 1975 when he went 15-4 with a career low 2.42 ERA.
After winning two World Series titles with the Reds in 1975 and 1976 and then move to the Yankees as a free agent. He continued his winning ways, putting up a 14-4 record to help the Yankees to a World Series title, his third in a row. Unfortunately he started experiencing shoulder problems in 1978 at just 27 years old. He sat out a few seasons but never played in the majors after his last appearance on July 9, 1978 and the Yankees officially released him in 1980.
He went on to be a pitching coach with the reds in the 90’s and 00’s.
The Score on Don Gullett – 6.5
This was one that kind of crept in and I had to jump on it. I try to monitor peoples returns and get some things out as quick as possible, especially for a good player like Don. I was glad this one came back, but I wished that I had a red card to send him.
Thanks Mr. Gullett! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
