The Story of the Autograph
Don Cockroft was a punter and placekicker in the NFL. He played his entire career with the Cleveland Browns from 1968 through 1980. Over those 13 season he ended up scoring the third most points for a Brown behind Phil Dawson and Lou Groza, also kickers.
Cockroft went to Adams State and was drafted by the Browns in the third round of the 1967 NFL Draft with the 55th overall pick. In his first nine season with the Browns he was both the kicker and punter and then toward the end of his career he dropped the punting. He’s actually one of the last two players to lead their team in both punting and kicking. Both he and David Green did that in 1976.
His best season kicking was 1974 when he made 87.5% of is field goals and led the league with that percentage. He was 216 for 328 in his career for a 65.9% accuracy. He actually led the league in punt yard in 1972 with 3498, a year he also led the league in percentage of field goals with 81.5%.
The Score on Don Cockroft – 5.0
Don has a fine autograph, it’s just too bad about where he signed the card. He signed right over that dark jersey. He had space a little lower, but I guess he likes to sign the middle of the card. I don’t think I’ve gotten a bible verse on a card in a while actually.
Thanks Mr. Cockroft! I’m giving this a 5.
