The Story of the Autograph

Don Carman is a former left-handed pitcher who played the majority of is career with the Philadelphia Phillies. He played from 1983 through 1992 but spent the last two seasons in Cincinnati and Texas. He worked as both a reliever and starter during his career.

Carman is from Oklahoma and was signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent in 1978. He spent several years in the minors and made his debut at the very end of the season in 1983, on October 1st. For his first three seasons and pretty much his last three seasons he worked in relief. But from 1986 through 1990 he also started games with his 1987 season being completely as a starter.

He had several great moments like a few complete game shutouts with four or less hits for his opponent. He also held Craig Biggio, Ken Griffey Jr., Pete Rose, Larry Walker, Matt Williams, and Jeff Leonard (all All-Stars) to a .025 batting average (1-for-40). In 1986 he took a perfect game into the ninth, but it was broken up by Bob Brenly.

These days he works as a sports psychologist for the Boras Corporation.

While, Don’t signature is leans toward the messy variety, I still like it. I can see the “D” and the “C” and it’s REALLY big. He makes a good effort to really fill up that card. The ’87 Topps card came out the better of the two.

Thanks Mr. Carman! I’m giving this one a 7.
