The Story of the Autograph

Don August, a right-handed pitcher who spent four seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB), is remembered for his resilience and dedication to the game. Born on July 3, 1963, in Inglewood, California, August’s path to the majors was anything but conventional, but it showcased his tenacity and ability to adapt at every level of the sport.

August attended Chapman University, where he was a Division II All-American, drawing attention from professional scouts. His strong collegiate performances culminated in his selection in the first round of the 1984 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros. However, his journey to the majors would take an unexpected turn, as he was traded, a deal for Danny Darwin with Mark Knudson also going with August, to the Milwaukee Brewers before making his major league debut.

Before joining the professional ranks, August had the honor of representing Team USA in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where baseball was a demonstration sport. His performance on the international stage further elevated his profile as a pitcher with strong control and poise under pressure.

August made his MLB debut with the Milwaukee Brewers on June 2, 1988. His rookie season turned out to be the best of his career. He posted a 13-7 record with a 3.09 ERA in 148.1 innings, quickly establishing himself as a reliable starter. August’s breakout season earned him recognition as a top five finisher in the American League Rookie of the Year voting. His mix of fastballs, curveballs, and sliders made him a crafty pitcher who could outthink hitters.

Despite his strong rookie campaign, August faced challenges in his subsequent seasons. Arm injuries and struggles with consistency limited his effectiveness, and he posted a combined 21-23 record over the next three seasons. He pitched for the Brewers until 1991, when his major league career came to a close.

After leaving MLB, August continued to play professional baseball, extending his career in various leagues overseas. He found success in Taiwan and Italy, where he enjoyed a late-career resurgence. His international career allowed him to keep playing the game he loved and provided unique experiences beyond the major leagues.

Following his playing days, August transitioned into coaching and mentoring the next generation of baseball players. He became involved in youth baseball, sharing his knowledge and passion for the game. His experiences at various levels of professional baseball gave him a broad perspective, making him a valuable resource for young pitchers looking to improve their skills.

This is my fourth successful return from him. To see the other successful returns, check out these posts:

Don has always been one of my favorites when it comes to returns. He’s consistent in how he signs, the quality of what he puts on your cards, and usually returns pretty quickly. Plus with him usually having cards of him in a Brewers uniform (aside from maybe a Team USA uniform) the blue marker he uses goes great witht he images on the cards.

Thanks Mr. August! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
