The Story of the Autograph
In the heart of the 1970s and early 1980s Cleveland Browns defense, one man stood out not just for his play, but for his intellect, discipline, and leadership: Dick Ambrose. Nicknamed “Bam Bam” for his hard-hitting style, Ambrose was a dependable linebacker and fan favorite who became a symbol of grit and consistency during an often turbulent era for the Browns.
But his story didn’t end with football. After hanging up his cleats, Ambrose forged an equally successful second career in law, proving that toughness and intelligence are not mutually exclusive.
Richard John Ambrose was born on January 17, 1953, in New Rochelle, New York. A standout athlete in high school, Ambrose earned a scholarship to the University of Virginia, where he played linebacker and earned a reputation for his tough, instinctive play.
Despite a solid college career, Ambrose was not widely heralded in the draft. The Cleveland Browns selected him in the 12th round of the 1975 NFL Draft — a long shot by any measure. Yet, he quickly proved he belonged in the league.
Ambrose cracked the Browns’ roster in his rookie year and steadily earned a starting role. From the late 1970s through the early 1980s, he became a key figure in the Browns’ defensive unit. Known for his physicality and sure tackling, he played middle linebacker with a throwback mentality — unflashy, tough, and always in the right place.
His best stretch came from 1977 to 1983, when he led the team in tackles several times and started every game for seven straight seasons. Though he never made a Pro Bowl, Ambrose was widely respected as the heart of the defense, bringing leadership and stability to a Browns team that went through ups and downs.
Fans and teammates admired him for his work ethic and no-nonsense approach. He wasn’t a headline-chaser or vocal showman — he simply did his job, week in and week out.
Ambrose’s retirement from football did not mark the end of his professional impact — in many ways, it was just the beginning. While still playing in the NFL, he began preparing for life after football, enrolling in law school at Cleveland State University College of Law.
After earning his law degree, Ambrose worked as a prosecutor and then entered private practice. His diligence and sense of fairness eventually led to a judicial appointment. In 2004, he was appointed to the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas in Ohio. Known for his calm demeanor and thoughtful rulings, Judge Ambrose became as respected on the bench as he was on the football field.
Dick Ambrose’s legacy is one of discipline, humility, and excellence. In football, he embodied the classic middle linebacker: smart, tough, and reliable. Off the field, he showed that athletes can transition into roles of civic leadership and intellectual rigor with the same dedication they brought to the game.
In Cleveland, where fans appreciate hard work and loyalty, Ambrose holds a special place. He was never the flashiest player, but he was always one of the most dependable — and that’s often the mark of true greatness.
The Score on Dick Ambrose – 6.0
Dick, or “Bam Bam” as he noted on this card (which I love), did a great job on this card. I think what I have run into with him is that I never have a lot of cards of him when I choose to send to him. And then when I have a card, it’s not great quality at all. So really the signature improves it all.
Thanks Mr. Ambrose! I’m giving this one a 6.
This is my second successful return from him. To see the first return, check out my post from January 2024.
