The Story of the Autograph

Dennis Rasmussen is a former left-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played in 12 seasons from 1983 to 1995 with the Padres (twice), Yankees, Reds, Cubs and Royals.

Rasmussen was born in Los Angeles, California but grew up in Colorado. He was drafted first by the Pirates in the 18th round of the 1977 MLB Draft out of high school and then by the Angels with the 17th overall pick in the first round of the 1980 MLB Draft while at Creighton University. He never appeared for the Angels though. Instead they traded him as the player to be named later in a deal that brought the Angels Tommy John.

But while he would play for the Yankees later, he still didn’t make his first appearance with them. The Yankees traded him to the Padres in September 1983 and he made his first appearance with the Padres on September 16th 1983. He went back to New York before the start of the 1984 season in a trade that got the Padres Graig Nettles for their run to the World Series that year.

He had some pretty good season with the Yankees including going 18-6 with a 4.56 ERA in 33 games with 32 starts in 1986. He started 9-7 the next year and the Yankees traded him to the Reds who would end up getting him back to the Padres in 1988. With all that movement he still put up some good seasons but started to fall off a little in 1990 in San Diego when he led the league in home runs allowed.

From there he went to a couple places but really didn’t put in any significant time at any of them. He was given the nickname “Count Full Count” by a former player and scout because he would always get into full counts with opposing hitters.

The think I think I like best about Dennis’ signature is that he fills up the card pretty well. He does it with a pretty active and fancy signature. Those capital letters are really nice and I like how they overlap each other on his stacked autograph. My favorite card of the bunch is his 1991 Upper Deck card.

Thanks Mr. Rasmussen! I’m giving this return a 7.
