The Story of the Autograph
Dennis Leonard is a former right-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1974 to 1986 and spent his entire career with the Kansas City Royals.
Leonard was born in Brooklyn and went to high school in Oceanside on Long Island, New York. He went on to attend college at Iona and was then drafted in the second round of the 1972 MLB Draft by the Royals. He made his major league debut two years later on September 4, 1974. He went 0-4 at the end of that first season but that was no where near a sign of things to come for him.
He had an extremely successful career, and really surprising as if you are not from that era, you might not remember him well. He only had losing seasons twice, that rookie year and his final season when injuries caught up with him. Other than that he is the only Royals pitcher to win at least 20 games three times. Also, from 1975 to 1981, he had more wins than any other right-handed pitcher in the majors.
His best seasons were 20-12 (1977), 21-17 (1978), and 20-11 (1980). Overall he ended his career with a 144-106 record, a 3.70 ERA and 1323 strikeouts.
The Score on Dennis Leonard – 7.0
Dennis has a really classic signature. I would say it’s along the same lines as Goose Gossage and guys like that. It looks really fancy. I think the thinner marker he uses adds to the fancy feeling too because it shows off all of the detail.
Thanks Mr. Leonard! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
