The Story of the Autograph
Dave Rader is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played from 1971 through 1976 with the Giants and then a year each with the Cardinals, Cubs, Phillies, and Red Sox.
Rader was the Giants first pick in the 1967 MLB Draft. After several years in the minors he was their starting catcher in 1972 after making his debut on September 5th the previous year. He had a pretty good rookie season for a catcher at the time and finished second in the NL Rookie of the Year voting to Jon Matlack. His next season was also good although not for average and then he bumped up his average to .291 for the next two seasons.
He was traded to the Cardinals in the fall of 1976 which started his jumping around to teams each year until the end of his career. Each time he was traded and only once (in Chicago) was he the starting catcher. But that’s what happens when you go to teams with Carlton Fisk, Bob Boone, Tim McCarver and Ted Simmons. He went to the Angels in 1981 but was released and his career was over.
The Score on Dave Rader – 4.5
Dave has an interesting signature, but the marker he used is so light that it didn’t come out very well on all these cards. I’m not sure he ever uses a heavier marker, but his signature is very reminiscent of Phil Garner’s. The marker failed him a bit on a couple of these, hence the score under 5.
Thanks Mr. Rader! I’m giving these a 4.5.
