The Story of the Autograph
Dave Parker, known by his nickname “The Cobra” is a former outfielder and designated hitter in the major leagues. He played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, Oakland Athletics, Milwaukee Brewers, California Angels and Toronto Blue Jays in a career that lasted from 1973 to 1991.
Parker was born in Mississippi but grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was drafted out of high school by the Pirates in the 14th round of the 1970 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut for them two years later on July 12, 1973. He spent two years up and down to the minors before becoming a regular in 1975.
Once he got his chance he took it. He hit over .300 five years in a row from 1975 to 1979 and that include two consecutive batting championships in 1977 and 1978. The second of those helped to earn him the NL MVP award. The next year was even better as he help the Pirates to a World Series win. He would make four All-Star games as a Pirate and then moved on to Cincinnati.
He went to the Reds as a free agent and after a dip in performance because of injuries and drug use, he came back to form. He made two more All-Star teams as a Red and hit .312 in 1985. He then moved on the the Athletics where he was part of another World Series championship in 1989.
Overall, The Cobra was an MVP, seven-time All-Star (with an All-Star MVP award), Homer Run Derby champ, two-time World Series winner, three-time Gold Glove winner, three-time Silver Slugger winner, and two-time batting champ.
The Score on Dave Parker – 6.0
Dave has a good signature but really only the 1981 card really shows it off. I would have loved to have sent other cards, but that 1978 Topps card was just calling for some ink on it. I love the uniform, the pose, and the All-Star logo on that card.
Thanks Mr. Parker! I’m giving this return a 6.
