The Story of the Autograph

Dave Bristol, born on June 23, 1933, in Macon, Georgia, became well-known for his successful career as a Major League Baseball (MLB) manager. He began managing in the minors at just 24 years old, leading the Hornell Redlegs in 1957. His talent as a leader quickly shone through, and by the mid-1960s, Bristol was managing at the highest level.

Bristol’s managerial career in MLB started with the Cincinnati Reds in 1966. His leadership helped shape the team’s roster, including notable players like Pete Rose and Johnny Bench, laying the groundwork for the “Big Red Machine” that dominated the 1970s. Although he didn’t win a championship with the Reds, Bristol earned respect for his ability to develop young talent and lead competitive teams.

After leaving the Reds, Bristol managed Milwaukee as they became the Brewers in 1970, moving from Seattle after they were the Pilots. He later went on to manage the Atlanta Braves and the San Francisco Giants. In addition to managing, Bristol also served as a coach for various teams, including the Montreal Expos, Philadelphia Phillies, and the Reds, over multiple stints.

Though he never captured a World Series title, Bristol’s legacy is his lasting influence on the teams he managed and the players he developed. After retiring from managing and coaching, Bristol remained a passionate figure in baseball, reflecting on his career while spending time with family and friends .

The Score on Dave Bristol – 6.5

Dave has a nice signature but its a bit buried on these cards. I think the best version of it is on the 1969 Topps card or possibly the 1981 Topps card. I think the images with him and some tobacco in his cheek is classic for that era. I think the one thing I almost missed in his signature is that he does include his number in there, but its almost part of his name.

Thanks Mr. Bristol! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
