The Story of the Autograph
Dave Beard is a former right-handed pitcher who played seven season in the majors between 1980 and 1989. He played for the Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs, and Detroit Tigers.
Beard was born and raised in Georgia and was drafted out of high school by the Athletics in the 1977 MLB Draft. He was promoted to the majors in 1980 and made his debut at age 20 on July 16th of that year. He only appeared in a few games that season and was mostly used in mop up duties in losses.
His 1980 season was pretty similar as he was a September call-up in 1981 although he wasn’t used in mostly losses. But he did make the postseason roster that year. He was good against the Royals and didn’t let up a run in 1.1 innings. Against the Yankees it was a different story as he gave up five hits and three runs in .2 innings.
He was more of a mainstay on the big club in 1982 and ended with a 10-9 record with only 2 starts. He also had 11 saves with a 3.44 ERA. 1983 wasn’t so good as he dealt with an injury and Oakland decide after the season to deal him to the Mariners.
He continued to have injury issues with the Mariners in 1984. He would end up in Chicago in 1985 and made a few appearances with them. He would be out of baseball for 14 months after a stint in the minors and moved on to the Tigers. He made some appearances for them in 1989 before being released and deciding to retire.
The Score on Dave Beard – 6.5
Dave has a pretty good autograph autograph with nice and prominent capital letters. The marker he used came out well but on that 1984 card it looks a little off in the picture. It’s as if it didn’t really lay the ink down strongly.
Thanks Mr. Beard! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
