The Story of the Autograph
Darren Holmes’ journey through professional baseball is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and a deep commitment to community. From his early days as a promising high school athlete to his current role in collegiate coaching, Holmes has left an indelible mark on the sport.
Born on April 25, 1966, in Asheville, North Carolina, Holmes showcased athletic prowess at T.C. Roberson High School, excelling in football, basketball, and baseball. Opting to pursue a professional baseball career, he was selected in the 16th round of the 1984 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers, foregoing a scholarship to the University of North Carolina.
Holmes made his MLB debut with the Dodgers on September 1, 1990. Over a 13-year career, he pitched for eight teams:
- Los Angeles Dodgers
- Milwaukee Brewers
- Colorado Rockies
- New York Yankees
- Arizona Diamondbacks
- St. Louis Cardinals
- Baltimore Orioles
- Atlanta Braves
Notably, he became the first closer in Colorado Rockies history, recording 25 saves in their inaugural 1993 season. His career statistics include a 35–33 win-loss record, a 4.25 ERA, 59 saves, and 581 strikeouts over 680 innings pitched in 557 games.
Holmes was in New York for a World Series with the New York Yankees in 1998, contributing during the regular season but not in the postseason. After a brief hiatus in 2001, he returned to the majors with the Atlanta Braves in 2002, posting a remarkable 1.81 ERA over 55 games. He retired after the 2003 season to spend more time with his family.
Transitioning to coaching, Holmes began at A.C. Reynolds High School in 2013. In 2014, he served as a biomechanics pitching consultant for the Atlanta Braves. From 2015 to 2019, he was the bullpen coach for the Colorado Rockies. He then joined the Baltimore Orioles as bullpen coach in 2020, later becoming assistant pitching coach, and contributed to the team’s 2023 American League East title. In 2024, he served as the bullpen coach for the Chicago Cubs.
In January 2025, Holmes embraced a new role as the pitching coach for North Greenville University, bringing his extensive experience to collegiate athletes.
Darren Holmes’ career reflects a dedication to excellence both on and off the field. His contributions as a player, coach, and community leader continue to inspire and impact lives.
The Score on Darren Holmes – 7.5
Darren has become a pretty reliable signer. I’ve never seen his home address out there but he signs wherever he’s been a coach. For me that’s been with his time as a Baltimore Orioles or Chicago Cubs coach.
Thanks Mr. Holmes! I’m giving these a 7.5 overall.
These aren’t my first returns from him. To see the other returns check out these posts:
