The Story of the Autograph
Dale Sveum is a former infielder in the major leagues. He played from 1986 through 1999 with the Brewers, Phillies, White Sox, Athletics, Mariners, Pirates (twice), and Yankees. He also managed for the Brewers and Cubs.
Sveum was born and raised in California where he played baseball, basketball and football (he was an All-State and All-American quarterback). The Brewers drafted him in he first round of the 1982 MLB Draft straight out of high school with the 25th overall pick. He was able to make it to the majors by 1986 and made his major league debut o May 12.
He’s probably best known for being a Brewer given he spent the most significant time in Milwaukee (five seasons from 1986 through 1991). He also had the best season of his career in Milwaukee in 1987. That season sveum hit .252 with 25 homers and 95 RBI while playing in 153 games. He would miss the 1989 season after terrible collision with his teammate Darryl Hamilton. Sveum broke his leg and came back in the 1990 season.
He later managed the Brewers, but for only 12 games in the 2008 season. He spent more significant time managing the Cubs, which he did in 2012 and 2013. He left there with a 127-197 record.
The Score on Dale Sveum – 6.0
Dale has a nice autograph but these cards don’t do a great job showing it off. The blue marker is great with the Brewers colors but it just doesn’t come out great on the 1987 Topps card. My favorite of this bunch is the 1992 Upper Deck card.
Thanks Mr. Sveum! I’m giving this return a 6.
