The Story of the Autograph

Craig McMurtry is a former major league pitcher. He played from 1983 through 1995 for the Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers and Houston Astros.

McMurtry is a native of Texas. He was drafted by the Braves with the fourth overall pick in the 1980 MLB Draft out of McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas. In 1982 he was the Pitcher of the Year in the International League while with the Richmond Braves. The Braves had him on their roster early in the 1983 season and he debuted on April 10, 1983.

He started out with a great rookie season. McMurtry went 15-9 with a 3.08 ERA in 36 games and 224.2 innings pitched. He did so well he finished seventh in the Cy Young voting and second in the Rookie of the Year voting to Darryl Strawberry. Unfortunately for McMurtry, it was all down hill from there.

He remained a starter in the 1984 season but pretty much reversed his record by going 9-17 and increased his ERA by almost a run and a half. He was pretty much relegated to the bullpen after for the Braves. In February of 1987 the Braves traded him to the Blue Jays, but he never appear for them. After the 1987 season he made his way to the Rangers and for the next several years he had an on-and-off relationship with them. They signed him four times and kept releasing him not too long after, three of those happening in 1990 and 1991.

From there he tried to make it with other clubs and got back to the majors with the Astros in 1995 before retiring. These days Craig coaches for Temple.

The Score on Craig McMurtry – 4.5

At first glance these look great. Craig’s got a signature with a ton of character. I love the underlining of the little “c” in his last name. But unfortunately these got bent up pretty good in transit. At least I am assuming it was in transit. If you look close you can see the diagonal crease in the cards. I’ll make an effort to get Craig to sign again another time to see if I can improve upon these damaged cards.

Thanks Mr. McMurtry! I’m giving this return a 4.5.
