The Story of the Autograph

Clay Carroll is a former pitcher in the major leagues. He worked as a reliever and closer throughout his fifteen year career. He played from 1964 to 1978 with the Milwaukee Braves/Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Carroll was born and raised in Clanton, Alabama. The Braves, who were in Milwaukee at the time, signed him as an amateur free agent in 1961. He made his major league debut for them three years later on September 2, 1964. He played sparingly those first two years and then the team moved to Atlanta. In his first year there he pitched in a league-high 73 games and went 8-7 with a 2.37 ERA, adding 11 saves and having three starts.

The Braves traded him to Cincinnati where he would spend the majority of his career. In the middle of the 1968 season he was traded with Tony Cloninger and Woody Woodward for Ted Davidson, Bob Johnson, and Milt Pappas. Over the next eight seasons he would make it to two All-Star games in back-to-back years (1971 and 1972), lead the league in saves (in 1972 with 37) and be part of the Reds 1975 World Series winning squad.

After the 1975 season he moved around quite a bit. The Reds traded him to the White Sox, the White Sox traded him to the Cardinals in 1977 (for Lerrin LaGrow) and in that same year the Cardinals sent him back to the White Sox. He was released from the White Sox before forhte 1978 Season and moved on to the Pirates where he spent one season. He tried to make it with the Brewers after that but played his last major league game with the Pirates on October 1, 1978.

Clay’s signature looks great on these cards. I don’t think they all lend themselves to showing off a signature, but he did a great job. I think my favorite are the Reds cards because thats where he played his best baseball and had his biggest accomplishments.

Thanks Mr. Carroll! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
